ICI Celebrates 74th General Assembly in Mizoram, Elects New Leaders, and Honors Legacy

The Independent Church of India (ICI) recently concluded its 74th Annual General Assembly, a significant event in the church’s calendar, held from 5th to 10th December 2023 at Sakawrdai, Mizoram. The assembly, themed ‘Lalpa Hung Nawkna’ or ‘The Second Coming of the Lord’, saw participation from 268 delegates representing 15 Presbyteries, 9 Mission Fields, 2 City Churches, and various departments.

This year’s assembly was shadowed by a somber note as the ICI mourned the loss of retired pastors Rev. Rosung Sinate and Rev. Zothanglien.

Embracing the future, the Assembly announced ‘Isu Krista Hung Nawkna’ – ‘The Second Coming of Jesus Christ’ (Revelations 22:12) as its theme for 2024.

A pivotal aspect of the assembly was the election of new leaders for a 3-year term to the ICI General Headquarters. The Executive Council of the ICI allocated portfolios as follows:

Rev. Dr. James R. Ruolngul as Secretary, Ministries
Rev. J. Thanglur as Secretary, Missions
Rev. Lalhmingthang as Secretary, Finance and Development

Rev. Dr. J.L Songate took over the reins as Moderator for 2024, succeeding Elder Dr. H.L Liensang. Additionally, Rev. H.B Hluothang was elected as the new Vice Moderator.

The assembly’s schedule included two meetings of the Executive Council, a two-day session of the General Assembly, and an annual session of the Assembly Musical Board.

In a cultural highlight, the Assembly Musical Board celebrated the 100th anniversary of the ICI’s songbook, ‘Independent Kohran Hla Bu‘. A special centenary edition of this songbook was released by Rev. Lalneikhup Hmar, which is now available at Christian Books & Stationeries, ICI Secretariat, Sielmat, Manipur.

The general assembly also hosted six public worship service sessions, featuring sermons by Rev. Lalrohlu, Rev. Laldinglien, Rev. J. Thanglur, Rev. Zathangsing Zate, and Elder Dr. H.L Liensang. Additionally, a special Pension & Ordination service was conducted by Rev. Lalneikhup Hmar, where eight new pastors were ordained.

The event was enriched by performances from choirs such as the ICI Central Choir, Assam Hills Presbytery Choir, Aizawl Presbytery Choir, Hmarphei Presbytery Choir, and Serlui Presbytery Choir. A special singing session was also held, with donations collected for the construction of new church buildings in Ratu and Tuolbung.

Recognizing years of dedicated service, full pensions were awarded to Rev. Lalrokhawm, Evan. Ramfangzau, Evan. L.V. Parkung, and Ms. Sailienthang, while medical pensions were granted to Pastor Thangroliana, Mr. S. Daniel Lalringnghet, and Evan. Lalropui Khawbung due to health issues.
